Every year, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) stages its grand political spectacle known as the “Two Sessions”—the National People’s Congress (NPC) and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). To the outside world, it appears to be a major political event, but in reality, it is nothing more than a carefully orchestrated performance. It serves neither as a genuine legislative session nor as a meaningful forum for democratic decision-making. Instead, it is a propaganda tool designed to project an illusion of “stability” and “unity” while concealing the inherent flaws of an authoritarian system that disregards the people’s will.
The Rubber-Stamp Legislature Under One-Party Rule
The NPC has rightfully earned the title of “the world’s largest rubber stamp,” and for good reason. Every bill presented to the congress has already been predetermined by the CCP leadership. The so-called “representatives” have only one task: to approve them. With nearly 3,000 delegates, voting results are astonishingly uniform, with approval rates often exceeding 99%. Such “unity” would be laughable in any true democratic country. The reality is that the NPC possesses no real legislative power—it is merely a rubber stamp controlled by the Party.
The CPPCC is an even greater farce. On paper, it brings together figures from various social sectors to “consult on state affairs,” but in practice, it serves only as a decorative institution. CPPCC members hold no actual power; their carefully vetted speeches offer nothing but token suggestions that ultimately do not influence policy. The so-called “consultation” process is nothing more than a performance designed to reinforce the Party’s decisions, rather than an avenue for genuine political discourse.
A Fake Election and Controlled Representation
The process of selecting NPC delegates is equally absurd. From village-level to national representatives, every step of the election process is tightly controlled by the CCP. Independent candidates are effectively barred from running, and the so-called “elections” are nothing but political theater.
Throughout history, a few brave individuals have attempted to challenge this rigged system by running as independent candidates. Without exception, they have been silenced, persecuted, or driven into exile. Their political aspirations were crushed before they could pose any real challenge to the Party’s monopoly on power. In such an environment, how can the NPC claim to represent the will of the people?
The Myth of Economic Growth and the Deepening Social Crisis
In recent years, the CCP has repeatedly touted the success of “Chinese-style modernization,” using economic growth and technological advancement as a justification for its authoritarian rule. However, the economic model that once fueled China’s rise—land-based financing and a real estate bubble—is now collapsing. With mounting local government debt, capital flight, and skyrocketing youth unemployment, the illusion of prosperity is fading.
Yet, instead of pursuing political reform, the CCP has chosen to tighten its grip on society. From intensified internet censorship to the suppression of dissenting voices, every move serves the sole purpose of maintaining absolute Party control. This rigid system, devoid of checks and balances, is leading China down a path of inevitable stagnation.
Rejecting CCP Autocracy, Demanding True Democracy
Throughout Chinese history, rulers have used the pretext of “stability” to suppress freedom, delaying the inevitable awakening of the people. But history does not stand still. The CCP’s deceptive political structure will not last forever. True democracy cannot be realized through the empty spectacle of the Two Sessions—it requires genuine electoral freedom, freedom of speech, and a system of checks and balances.
What China needs today is not another round of empty promises from the CCP, but a political system that truly belongs to the people. The absurdity of the Two Sessions is merely a symptom of the Party-state’s decaying system. Real change will come not from within the regime but from the people’s desire for freedom and justice. Rejecting silence and resisting the dictatorship of the CCP is the only way forward for Chinese society.
